When moving to the Select Phase, do I contact suppliers before looking at the competition on Amazon?

That part can be chicken and egg, however I always like to be armed with my FOB cost pricing and Product dimensions , because then I have one final piece of artillery, that being what I can sell the item for. e.g. If there was tons of competition but I could sell the item at half the price of every offer, then the competition would look quite insignificant. Whereas, if I didn't have that information first I might be scared off the item by the volume of competitors.
