Assuming the products are the same type, with only a few modifications, is it okay to use parent/child relationships?

Our opinion would be that parent/child products really only happen 1 of 2 ways using our system, 1 is by chance , by chance I mean that a product you have researched and brought through the 4S is a child product of another. 2 is a more deliberate method in that you have actively sought out a child product and ran it through 4S also to see whether it stacks up. I would say that a child product should be done because "it sounds like a good idea" or because "I want to have another colour option", it should always have logic and profitability.
